I spoke with a Romany entrepreneur who wants to remain anonymous.
"I am in the construction business. Some time ago I got an offer to dig a trench half a kilometer long to lay phone cables. I started hiring people, offering a couple of days of well-paid work.
Surprisingly enough, I encountered quite a lot of resistance. People are on welfare and if they started working they would lose their benefits. My prospective workers also told me that working just for a couple of days didn’t sound very appealing. ‘It’s easier to sit at home and collect welfare.’
Finally, I had to turn down that offer. I couldn’t find any people, and I had my own workers tied up in a different job.”
