In conjunction with the upcoming residency of the OBIE-Award-winning African-American playwright, director, and performance artist Robbie McCauley in the “Connecting Seas” program at the Getty Research Institute, the Stories Exchange Project (www.stories-exchange.org) is gathering women and men of Los Angeles arts, educational, and other professional communities to take part in workshops with her during May and June.
Robbie McCauley will lead participants in exploring how they can better engage the complex demands of urban America by more consciously articulating and performing – in their daily life and work – the deep knowledge of older cultural traditions that they have gained in growing up abroad or in families from overseas. Focusing on challenges they have faced in balancing often very different approaches, they will consider together how they can further embody and activate the diversity of their experience: both to enrich their own lives, and to realize their full personal and professional potential as members and citizens of communities both here and elsewhere.
The workshops in Los Angeles will be linked by live video stream with parallel sessions in Tangier, and will be filmed along with related events for continuing development of the Project and other American and North African inter-cultural initiatives.
Two parts of a documentary on Robbie McCauley’s work as a director in Prague can be seen here.
